CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: James Moriarty
CANON: Fate/Grand Order
HISTORY: A link to the wiki and I'm so sorry it's terrible

In addition, my portrayal of Moriarty majorly draws on a (currently) JP only event translation, the most pertinent bits which I'll link below:

Part 1

Part 3

Part 5

There's also his Extra Materials profile which has a few more tidbits I use:

Servant Profile

STRENGTHS: (List and briefly describe 3 factors in your character's personality that would be considered things that make them strong and successful)

Intelligence / Cunning: The most well known of his traits, his intelligence for pulling off crimes and being able to be undetected for years, except by a certain detective. Despite his looks, Moriarty is incredibly smart and able to run circles around most people, and plan so that he's always a step ahead. He's also incredibly good at mathmatics, able to calculate things most people would struggle with - and also apparently learn coding pretty quickly, somehow manipulating AI to actually get mad about their constant defeat in the battle simulator. He's also able to use that intelligence to his advantage with his dealing with people, which leads right into...

Charismatic: Moriarty is extremely Charismatic, even having a skill in game called 'Evil Charisma (Charisma of Wicked Wisdom in the NA version)', having it ranked at A, with his Extra Material saying at that level, it's feasible for him to control the whole world from the shadows. He's very good at being friendly and seeming absolutely harmless, which may or may not be an act - it mostly does seem genuine, but it's hard to tell with Moriarty just BECAUSE of that boundless charisma which makes people quickly drop their guard around him, and also listen to what he says. He's able to pretty deftly manipulate people, and that's because...

Understanding: He actually is able to understand why and how people think pretty well - in both Shinjuku and the white day event, he's able to see the different points of view of their 'enemies', so to speak, and be able to use that thinking against them when it came down to it. By understanding, it's easier to know what they'd want to hear - or do. And maybe, just in a few occasions....he can use it in a good way, too.

FLAWS:

Proud / Stubborn: This is a man who went after Sherlock even though his entire group had been caught, and if he had been caught, well - he would have been hung like all the rest. He constantly refers to himself as the Napoleon of crime, taking pride in calling himself a scoundrel, devil, monster - revelling in the image that he has due to his legend. According to his own words, it was that pride that led him to face Sherlock at the falls empty handed, wanting to show the man 'a villain's Stubbornness.' For Moriarty, that pride was worth dying for - even in Shinjuku, where he beat and absorbed Sherlock, patiently waiting for the meteor he'd called to fall and end his life.

Deceptive: Moriarty is known as 'the old spider', and he's also very duplicitous - indeed, his charisma and his harmlessness is often an act to get people to drop their guards around him, especially because he's just so friendly and happy, how could he ever try to manipulate or do horrible things? Not only that, but he has a habit of not flaunting how intelligent he is - crowing about how evil he is, yes, but he doesn't show off just how much he's paying attention to someone's conversation or the way they're acting until it's too late for said person to do anything. A spider looks harmless hanging in it's web, after all - until the fly is trapped inside.

Ruthless: Though he was the plotter, never truly getting his hands dirty - he still ordered plenty of men to their deaths, one way or another. And, indeed, Moriarty makes it clear in canon that he is willing to do anything to further his goals - be that stabbing Sherlock and finally winning against him, or throwing mayonnaise at passing cars to try to win a drag race so he can profit from all the bets he made. While he does have his pride, he's willing to toss away everything if it's needed - or anyone, as he nearly did with the Master of Chaldea before they stopped him.

CANON ABILITIES:

Moriarty is fused the phantom Der Freischütz, and thus has access to the Magic Bullets of legend - 6 bullets that will hit wherever he wishes, and the final will aim straight for the one he cares for.

He is also a Servant with high agility and C rank strength, though he has no real style of fighting beyond shooting plenty of bullets and missiles from the Coffin he carries...and being able to slam said coffin into his enemies.

His Noble Phantasm is 'The Dynamics of an Asteroid', which is an anti-army attack that embodies his goal of planetary destruction, capable of cracking the ground and leaving massive fissures. It also causes him to fire off a Shitton of bullets and rockets before letting loose with an actual freaking LASER.

Fate is a ridiculous canon.

And being a Servant, he can go invisible and immaterial at any time.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: James Moriarty (along with other aliases in his past, most of which I will make up on the fly)
AGE: 180 - 190 something
POSITION: Mathmatics Professor
AU BACKSTORY:

His backstory is the same as the books, though following a bit more with the version FGO presents (him turning to crime after having his book be censored/blacklisted in academia instead of the implication he was a criminal even as a professor) up to the falls.

He and Sherlock both fall into Reichenbach, Moriarty still bouncing off a rock (and breaking his back in the process) and going underwater, beginning to drown and die. However, unknown to either of the two men, they'd accidentally set off a ritual connected to Reichenbach falls by doing what they did on just the right day and time, and basically connected their fates to each other. Normally, they'd have died too quickly to realize what happened, buuuut...Then Dracula turns Sherlock, and through the link, the nearly drowned Moriarty suddenly can't die, dragging himself out of the falls and onto the bank, where he witnesses Dracula carrying Sherlock away to parts unknown before passing out.

Due to the whole 'broken back' thing, Moriarty basically loses consciousness for 5 years and runs around on autopilot until his mind essentially gets used to the continual agony...which also basically leaves him with an absolutely absurd pain tolerance, because compared to having a compressed spine that shouldn't be functioning but is literally forced to due to magic bullshit, not much really hurts anymore!

He also notes that while he's still warm and bleeds, he definitely doesn't have a pulse, doesn't exactly need to breathe (though he does out of habit) or really experiences hunger much anymore. Amused at the thought of somehow gaining immortality when he wasn't looking for it in the slightest, he goes about his merry way until the modern day, travelling all around the world and living the best he can, never really staying in one place very long due to the aforementioned Immortality...and that most of the time he's diving headlong into crime (and also testing out that immortality by dying, uh, a lot, some in controlled tests, and some because having your current alias 'die' by getting taken out by other criminal elements is a lot easier and more final than just leaving town, plus being able to collect on insurance money through other fake identities named as recipients). During this time, he also teaches himself a few spells, tapping into the magic that keeps him alive to be able to pull off at least good glamour and two other personal spells.

However, he does wonder why he gained immortality when he doesn't...really remember doing anything to gain it- and he ends up learning about the supernatural side of the world rather abruptly one day about 30 years ago from the present. He managed to be caught up during a hunt that one Shiro Fujimoto** was in, being killed by the creature the young man was hunting - and coming back to life just as Shiro was doublechecking the area, being instantly shot in the head by the man. When he returned back to life, he now knew that the supernatural side of the world was much more active than he had believed and got himself involved in it - running a few scams here and there because you gotta, and eventually coming to learn about Nightfall and Daybreak academy.

When he learns about the academy, it's right after another of his identities in the human world has passed - and he figures that teaching again might be nice...and if he could potentially learn more about this 'Nightfall' thing, that would be an added bonus, and he may as well use his original name, because why the hell not?

And so, Moriarty makes his way to Daybreak with his original name and a new face, intent on learning what he can, teaching these kids what he knows...and maybe even potentially helping out with stopping Nightfall.

After all, he's grown pretty fond of the human world after spending so long in it, and it would be very boring for it all to go up in smoke after all the time and effort he's spent there.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: He's more reckless than his Canon counterpart - while he's still just as wily and cautious, he's much more inclined to throw himself in dangerous situations due to, well, just being able to come back if he dies. On top of that, he is still technically human, and dealing with the effects of aging on a human mind is...a little messy, to say the least. He has issues with time due to having lived so long, which is why he worked on the butterfly spell to begin with.

He's also not as preoccupied with 'Good' and 'Evil' like his Servant self - as being among humans for so long has given him much more nuance, along with his mind having been, uh...kind of broken a little just to continue living, with no actual goals or desires beyond survival and what's 'fun or interesting.' When you've lived so long with just a human mind, well...

** I got permission from Maple (Shiro's apper) to have this weave in like this!

RACE: Human / Undead (technically)
SECRET SOCIETY: N/A.
POWERS:

STRENGTHS:

Link Bleedover: Due to having a literal Soul-link with a Vampire, Moriarty is afforded a little bit more than the average human, though definitely not as much as if he actually WERE a vampire. This means:

- He has heightened senses, though they peak at 'Uncannily good for a human'. He can also see well in dim light, as if he had a tapetum lucidum, but he'll be just as blind as anyone else in pitch black darkness.

- Very strong, though again more on the 'holy shit that's like what olympic weightlifters can do' instead of the super strength given to Vampires.

- No longer needs to breathe or eat, and doesn't get hungry - though he can still die of thirst and needs water to survive.

Unique Undead: Due to the link, Moriarty is perpetually at a state of 'dead but alive', also known as 'Schrodinger's Human' - and so doesn't rot, doesn't need to breathe (though he does out of habit / to blend in) and is warm to the touch. However, he has no heartbeat, which can give him away if someone has good hearing or gets close enough to notice it.

Immortality?: Moriarty can recover from...well, any death, as long as Sherlock remains alive (in a manner of speaking), even those that would be fatal for the Vampire himself (such as burning alive or decapitation). That being said, it's not really recovery, and more just a straight up revival - He is genuinely dead for however long it takes him to regenerate what's needed.

This regeneration takes time as well - depending on the type of death, it could take anywhere from a few hours (ex: being shot in the head/lungs, bleeding out) to several days (Nerve damage / catastrophic damage, etc). As it is bleedover from Sherlock's abilities, it isn't as robust or effective as Vampiric regeneration would be, and most of it is taken up by constantly keeping his spine functioning. He is also able to regenerate minor injuries rather quickly, as even deep cuts would close in a matter of minutes if he's 'alive'.

Magic: Moriarty has had time to teach himself quite a few things - as his existence literally runs on Magic to keep him 'alive', he used his keen mind to learn a few tricks.

- Glamour: Moriarty is able to disguise himself effortlessly and almost undetectably, beyond the slight trace of magic that drapes his form. He is able to change his height, face, and voice, though his hair seems unable to be changed, staying a stubborn gray.

- End of the Spider's Thread: A thin, easily dispelled magic 'thread' that he can stick to walls, objects, and people which allow him to know where people are within his 'web' / if they disturb it or enter it (within a 20 ft radius), and also allows him to listen into their conversations. Of course, though it's easily dispelled, it's nearly invisible to magic senses and physical ones - and those with keen senses will often only feel as if they've walked into a spider web when it attaches. (OOCLY, there'll be a permissions post for people to opt into basically having their characters be bugged if they want, and he would string up his classroom, office, and apartment/room for surveillance purposes.)

-Butterflies: These are basically 'Psuedo-Familiars', as they come from himself and tend to spontaneously generate from him when they're needed without active thought on Moriarty's part. They are Ulysses Butterflies with glow in the dark properties, and function as reminders / scouts or as ways for Moriarty to grab something / remove something without needing to move. They cannot lift very much on their own, only able to grab small objects like a pen or a remote, though they are capable of grouping together to lift something heavier if needed. They seem to be able to 'communicate' with Moriarty, though even he'll admit the information he gets seems to be more 'feeling' based than actual details.

WEAKNESSES

Link bleedover: Though the link mostly provides benefits, unfortunately there are a few downsides.

- Nocturnal Circadian Clock: Due to Sherlock's 'dead at dawn' thing, Moriarty is extremely groggy from dawn to noon if forced to be awake, and is at the level of a normal human from noon to dusk beyond the regenerative power. As such, he tends to go to sleep at dawn and only wake up in the early afternoon, and spend all night awake.

- He's not really a fan of garlic or wild roses anymore, though it's less 'repel' and more 'intense dislike' for him. However, silver or religious items do nothing to him, and he has no weakness to the sun beyond burning a bit more easily. However, due to being a pasty white british man, he hasn't really noticed.

- It's also entirely possible for someone to 'lock' him into a death loop of sorts - for example, by keeping him impaled or the old cement shoes and tossed in the harbor.

- He and Sherlock 'share' things in the link - like pain, drunkenness, excitement, etc. However, they need to be near each other to feel it the most intensely, and distance dulls the feedback, though some things still carry even across long distances, and his own health tends to correlate with how well Sherlock's taking care of himself.

- And, of course, though he's 'immortal', if someone kills Sherlock, he will die at the exact same time.

Pain insensitivity: while it's technically a Strength as well, Moriarty's pain tolerance due to the constant pain he feels in his spine leads him to often be careless with his physical well-being, leading to getting cuts or burnt often. He doesn't really see anything wrong with it, as it tends to heal up rather quickly and it's not like he can feel it anyway, but it can still lead to issues and potentially getting sick, since that's a thing he can still get.

Human Mind: Unlike most undead or vampires, Moriarty's mind has, unfortunately, been a human's the entire time - which means time is slightly nebulous to him unless he has reminders (like his butterflies) or a routine, and things tend to slip his mind a little too easily. He's still quite sharp, though.

HOUSING: On campus, no preference.

INTERVIEW SAMPLE PROMPT

1. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND.

Of course - I am quite learned in a variety of subjects, though my major is, of course, in Mathmatics, from a very prodigious school -

[And here he hands over an official looking certificate from a more modern british school, though it's forged.

...It's really hard to tell it's fake, though.]

- but I believe my education is quite well rounded enough to potentially help any students that may need help in other subjects.

2. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEACHING EXPERIENCE.

[When he's asked this, his eyes seem to light up a bit as a smile crosses his face.]

I've taught in quite a few classes in my day - Indeed, I believe teaching is one of my true callings. Watching my students come to comprehend the subjects that I teach...yes, there's truly something wonderful about that moment.

...Ah, but I also have experience wrangling troublesome students! Sometimes a firm hand is needed, after all.

3. WHAT UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE ACADEMY?

Well, an older perspective, of course! I believe my experience in living may very well bring the students new ways of thinking, if they are inclined to listen to me prattling on.

4. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR A SCHOOL TO PROVIDE TO ITS STUDENTS?

[When he speaks, it's completely serious.]

A good education, and educators that are quite devoted to providing an environment that encourages students to learn, without faculty politics being involved.

[There's a faint...bitter edge to the last of that, before he clears his throat.]

Of course, such things are the bare minimum, are they not?

5. DESCRIBE YOUR COMMUNICATION STYLE AND HOW YOU INTERACT WITH COWORKERS.

Well, I am quite verbose, as you've no doubt noticed!

[He gives a well intentioned laugh, turning the charm up.]

Still, I hope that I can be understood clearly, and with no misunderstandings. As for how I interact...well! I try to be quite amicable towards my coworkers, and even if we do not mesh quite well, I can at least tolerate them. I've quite the history of having to tolerate all sorts, you see - so I have ample experience!

6. HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PUSH THEMSELVES AND TAKE THEIR SCHOOLWORK SERIOUSLY?

Simple - by making lessons entertaining enough that they pay attention, and by being approachable that any questions they may have about the work can be easily answered. In my experience, being friendly is a great way to foster trust among people, especially students - and most that feel that their professor is willing to help will perform much better than those who fear or distrust them.

7. HOW DO YOU MANAGE STUDENTS WHO ARE DEFIANT OR ACTING OUT?

Well - being firm with them, of course. No corporal punishment, though the ones who continue to act out after a talk will find points being deducted from their grade with every incident.

...Of course, I'm not some strict old man - those that act out or are defiant often merely have other issues that need to be taken care of first, or arise from frustration due to being unable to comprehend the lesson. I would rather take such students head on, and attempt to solve the underlying problem.

[He smiles, though there's a bit of a devilish glint to it...?]

After all, I have great faith in my ability to handle troublemakers.

8. HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE AND MENTOR STUDENTS WHO ARE STRUGGLING OR DEPRESSED?

A kind word or gesture goes a long way in soothing such things - support and trust, along with understanding, can easily push people past any roadblocks or instability that stands in their way.

...As I said previously, I hope to be approachable - or, at the very least, seen as friendly enough that a slightly intrusive question would not go amiss, and work from there.

9. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON TO TEACH EVERY STUDENT WHO WALKS THROUGH OUR DOORS?

To rely on one's own mind and wit to get them through the most difficult situations - though friends and allies are important, you are your own greatest weapon and shield when push comes to shove.

17. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE FOR YOUR STUDENTS?

As much that is needed! I am an educator - so I am willing to go as far as I am called to, of course. ...That being said, if some students happen to go the distance, well...I would be remiss in not being by their side to help them as they attain greater heights.
