It is the end of the 19th century, in London - where a criminal mastermind has made a large, interconnected web in the seedy underbelly of the city. This Mastermind is clever enough to have evaded detection for most people, like a spider in the center of a large web. Yet, that web is able to be detected by the Greatest Detective - Sherlock Holmes, who has been chasing after the man he himself calls the 'Napoleon of Crime.'
Of course, the mastermind attempted to discourage him, to get him to call off his search - even appearing before him and talking to him frankly, warning that any attempt to destroy him will result in the criminal dragging the detective down to hell with him.
Of course, the detective laughs, and the mastermind departs.
Attempts are made on the life of the detective, and the detective and his doctor friend flee england, ultimately ending up in Switzerland. The detective has managed to catch all the criminals that made up the mastermind's web - except the mastermind himself, who he knows will be after his life alone.
Yet, the detective is content - if he can rid london of the mastermind, then he will be happy to retire in peace.
...Ultimately, the detective and the doctor end up near a great waterfall - the Reichenbach. Out of consideration for his great rival, the mastermind forges a fake letter calling the doctor back to the hotel. The detective knows it is a ruse, yet allows his friend to leave.
The doctor discovers it's a ruse, and rushes back to the waterfall...but only finds the hat the detective was wearing, along with a letter he'd written. On the path, there is only signs of a struggle before it seems to go off the edge...plunging down to the churning water below.
[And...he stops recounting for a moment, his eyes suddenly far away.
The rushing of the falls - for a moment, it's loud in ears...
But he quickly comes back, shaking his head as if to rid himself of the noise.]
The Doctor has to determine, in the end - that the Detective and the Mastermind, locked in deadly combat...slipped off the edge, and fell to their deaths.
Hilariously I read the Final Problem earlier today
[He straightens up a little, as if reciting.]

The end.
